Chios covers 900 km² and its most remarkable spots — Mavra Volia beach, Pyrgi, Mesta, Nea Moni — are all 25–45 km from the port. Public buses exist but are infrequent and don't reach the most interesting places. A rental car or scooter transforms Chios from "nice island" to "best island you've ever seen."

→Chios Airport (HIO): Hertz and Avis desks inside the terminal. Open for all flight arrivals — ideal if you fly in and want wheels from day one.

→Online in advance: Rentalcars.com, AutoEurope, or directly with Hertz/Avis. Essential for July–August when cars sell out weeks ahead.
→Scooter rental: Available from stands in Chios Town harbour area — no advance booking usually needed in spring and autumn.

→Economy car (Fiat 500, VW Polo): €30–50 — covers everything on the island, ideal for 1–2 people.
→Mid-size car (Toyota Yaris, Hyundai i30): €45–70 — comfortable for 4 people with luggage.
→SUV / 4WD: €65–95 — only worth it for off-road tracks; most Chios roads don't need it.
→Scooter 125cc: €22–35 — most popular for solo travellers and couples. Roads are dry and safe from May–October.
→ATV / Quad: €40–60 — fun for day trips but not needed for main tourist routes.
→Always take CDW (collision damage waiver). Petrol is extra, ~€1.90–2.10/litre.

🛣️ Road Tips for Chios

→Roads are good: Main routes Chios Town ↔ Pyrgi and Chios Town ↔ Mesta are well-maintained asphalt, signed in both Greek and English.
→Fuel up in Chios Town: There are few petrol stations in the south. Fill your tank before heading to Mavra Volia or Emporios.
→Mountain road to Nea Moni: 15 km from Chios Town, narrow and steep in places. Fine for any car — just drive slowly.
→Free parking everywhere: Pyrgi, Mesta, Mavra Volia — all have free car parks just outside the main site. No stress.
→Navigation: Google Maps works perfectly on Chios. Download offline before leaving the port.
→Speed limits: 50 km/h in villages and towns, 90 km/h on the open road. Occasional police checkpoints.

🗺️ Best Day Routes by Car

→Southern Circuit (~95 km, half day): Chios Town → Pyrgi (25 km, xistá village) → Emporios (10 km, Byzantine sites) → Mavra Volia beach (2 km) → Mesta village (15 km) → return to Chios Town. The best single day on the island.
→Mountain & Monastery Loop (~65 km, half day): Chios Town → Nea Moni UNESCO monastery (15 km) → Anavatos ghost village (7 km) → Avgonyma village (5 km) → return. Stunning highland scenery.
→Beach Hopping (40 km, morning): Chios Town → Karfas (7 km) → Agia Fotini (3 km) → Trahelia (6 km). Progressively quieter beaches heading south.
→Full Island Loop (~150 km, full day): Combine both circuits above for an epic overview of Chios. Stop for lunch in Pyrgi or Mesta.
