Vroulida Beach

★★★★★4.9(71 reviews)

Vroulida (Βρουλίδα) is arguably the most dramatic beach in Chios — and one of the most dramatic in the entire Aegean. Accessed via a steep, winding path that descends between towering volcanic cliffs, it feels like discovering a lost world. The beach itself is small — a narrow strip of dark pebbles at the foot of sheer rock walls — but the surroundings are extraordinary. The cliffs rise 40–50 metres on either side, channelling the sea into a deep, intensely blue-green pool of extraordinary clarity. Snorkelling here is some of the best on the island — the rocky underwater terrain is rich with marine life. The path down takes about 10–15 minutes and requires reasonable fitness and grippy shoes — it involves some scrambling over loose rock. There is absolutely no shade on the path in summer, so make the descent early in the morning. Vroulida has no facilities whatsoever. No cantina, no toilets, no sun loungers. This is its entire appeal — it remains one of the few truly wild, unspoiled beaches on Chios. Located near Emporios in southern Chios, Vroulida can be combined with a visit to nearby Mavra Volia (15 minutes' drive), Didima beach, or the ancient village of Emporios itself.

Local Tips

Wear proper shoes — flip flops are dangerous on the descent. Start the walk down before 9am in summer to avoid the heat. Bring all food and water. Do not attempt in wet conditions — rocks become slippery. The exact trailhead is best found via Google Maps ("Vroulida Chios") — signage is minimal.

The walk down is intense in August heat but the payoff is unlike anything I have seen. The cliffs on either side, the deep blue water below, the complete silence — Vroulida is one of the most extraordinary places I have been in Greece. Bring water shoes and go early.

Not for the faint-hearted but absolutely spectacular. The descent takes 15 minutes of careful scrambling but the beach at the bottom is otherworldly. The snorkelling in the crystal water is some of the best I have done. Completely unspoiled.
